BLOOD ON THEIR HANDS...

Through the last two years of our work, the one thing that disturbs us the most is when people abandon their pets.
What could be more cruel than giving an animal the security of a home, and then snatching it all away in one go?
We have seen pets abandoned at shelters, we have seen them being thrown out of luxurious cars, we have seen them being locked out of their own homes, we have seen them being left back at clinics...
Reasons? too old, too noisy, not noisy enough, terminally ill, not the right pedigree, too hairy, not hairy enough, too active, too lethargic...the list is absolutely endless.
We have had so many cases where we were called, a german shepherd abandoned on its last stage of cancer, a pomeranian abandoned for no apparant reason, a great dane in a plastic bag, a great dane shot and then left to bleed, a boxer at a veterinary clinic for recurring skin infection, another boxer for no apparant reason, a dachshund that was very old, a golden retriever terminally ill with cancer, a labrador for no apparant reason, a dalmation who was deaf.
So it makes us wonder what kind of demons we humans really are. We who buy pedigrees only because they look good next to our lladro statues and teak chairs. We who discard our pets when their expiry date is close like a jar of pickle. We who cant look beyond colour, sex and creed(breed) even when it comes to choosing our pets.

So many times we wonder why people do not humanely put their pets to sleep if they do not want the pet and cannot find a suitable enough home for it. Surely that is a finer way to say goodbye than driving ten kms and throwing your 12 years old dog out of the car. Surely euthanasia is better than leaving your ageing friend in a shelter to rot? What could be worse than shutting the door on your faithful companion, after he dedicated his life to making you happy every single evening without fail?

The only thing that makes sense is that people do not have the strength to deal with the idea of euthanasia. No because then they will have blood on their hands. How can they deal with the burden of taking away a life?
We have just one thing to say...for all of you who think that abandoning your pet is the easy way out, your hands got bloody the day you shut your pet out of your life.

P.S: The above article is only a reflection, because we have found so many terminally ill pets being abandoned. ResQ Charitable Trust follows a strict no kill policy for healthy animals, we believe that each animal has the right to survive in good health. All abandoned pets found by us are nurtured back to health(unless terminally ill) and then re-homed.

REHOME

The program was formulated on the philosophy that one dog homed is one off the streets.

Busy in our fascination of imported breeds, we have completely sidelined breeds that have been an inherent part of our country. So many dogs find their lineage running into our history, yet very few know what they are called. Many now live by the name "stray" when actually they are descendants from an illustrious line of hounds that helped kings hunt, soldiers fight, farmers protect and tribes herd.

The Great Indian Dog: Few others are as sturdy, as intelligent and as loyal. Blinded by our love of novel things we have forgotten these dogs. Now all they are known as are "mongrels", "pariahs", and "street dogs".

In our bid to resurrect the popularity of the Great Indian Dog, we are proactively encouraging the adoption of young puppies that are born around your corner store, that see the hardships of life from day one, value every meal, and cherish the warmth of every smile they receive. They too need a chance on life. Make them a part of your world, and they will make you their universe

It’s not what is on the outside, but on the inside that truly matters.

Note from us...

A great passion for animals balanced with a practical approach to human-animal conflict existing in the city of Pune lead to the formation of RESQ CHARITABLE TRUST and THE PAWS PACK in January 2007.

In January 2007, we got together by fate and decided that we had to do something on a large scale to make a difference to animals in need. The idea was to set up a 24 hour emergency helpline for animals. It was an idea that had been tried before but not followed through. It was an idea that required a lot of hard work from us, plenty of sleepless nights, but we had made up our minds, and cynics were not going to persuade us differently. With the help of all whom we know, we started off rescuing and re-homing as many stray dogs and cats as could, whether the call came to us at 2am in the morning or 3pm in the afternoon, we were there.

The next problem was of creating a sustainable model. Beyond a point the operation is unaffordable and so we had to find ways of being independent and not becoming another static statistic.

From there arose the idea of THE PAWS PACK, the pet management company. We set up a company to help facilitate pet ownership. With busy lifestyles, many people do not have the time they would like with their pets. We decided to provide owners with different services that would help them from bringing a pet home all the way to coping with the grief of losing a pet. We wanted to provide a spectrum of services to help owners and their pets have a relationship they will always cherish.

WAG-O-LOGY, SCHOOL OF TRAINING AND BEHAVIOUR offers pre-pet counselling, training, and behaviour modification,

DOGGY DINERS, provides natural gourmet meals delivered fresh at your door step.We also have a range of biscuits and treats for your pet!

Also, we have now set up a state-of-the-art dog hostel. We noticed the lack of good boarding facilities in our city. Our desire to set up a home away from home for pets, which is synonymous with luxury and comfort led to the idea of THE PAWSH.

Together, through THE PAWS PACK and RESQ we want to make a difference, not just with the homeless animals, but also to see happier pets and pet owners. It breaks our heart to see dogs that have been abandoned, only because the owners were not guided properly or because they were fed up of not being able to go on a vacation. THE PAWS PACK and RESQ propagate responsible pet ownership and compassion to animals.

As Robert Frost quotes, “miles to go before I sleep”, this is something we believe in…a belief strong enough to sideline any thing else that we were doing before January 2007.
